A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it. -Ray Davis

As fellow photographers we loved that this session submission came with a photographer’s personal challenge.  Not only is this a precious family session, but Erin of EGM Photography, set a personal challenge for herself with photographing this session. Read on to learn more.

What We Love:

Erin: [Being] totally tired of staring at the week-old piles of snow outside and I’ve been daydreaming of some pretty fall golden hour sessions. (She decided to submit one to Life + Lens Blog) I shot this one completely with one lens after making a self-challenge to simplify my photography and loved the results. Went with the 50mm f/1.4 prime lens on my Canon 6D. This family (completely styled by Mama) was gorgeous and they also happened to be the kindest, coolest people to work with.

As a family photographer, my subjects are often babies and little kids. I love this – they’re joyful, they’re dynamic, and they create endless possibilities for capturing connections between loved ones. I’m always happy to grab that “for the wall” perfectly-posed portrait that some clients are looking for, but the sessions that really speak to me are those that star sweet families being themselves. I’ve definitely got tricks up my sleeve for encouraging interaction and creating a fun shoot that results in natural smiles from everyone. But as we all know (hey, I’ve got 3 kids of my own!) babies are children are unpredictable. There’s often not time to interrupt the flow of things by stopping to dig around in your camera bag to change lenses. I’ve got a two all-time favorites in my bag (I’m “Team Canon!”) – the 135 f/2 L, and the 24-70 f/2.8 L. While those are beauties, my work horse lens for families is probably the 50mm f/1.4. I shot this entire session with it; it’s sharp and fast… you can’t go wrong! It was a little challenge to myself and it ended up being one of my favorite family shoots ever.

Rachel + Lisa: This session is the perfect reason why we think “back stories” are so important!  We were so excited that Erin chose to submit a session that served as a personal challenge of simplifying her photography and you don’t get much simpler than a prime lens!  Thanks to Erin for providing a little background on why you chose this self – challenge and we think she achieved beautiful results with gorgeous lighting and rich color.  Don’t you agree?!

Have you set a challenge for yourself as a photographer?  We’d love to hear from you! Please visit our submission instructions to learn more.
