It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.” ― Sarah Addison Allen, First Frost

This quote so perfectly describes this fall family photography session from Megan Lena Photography.  Brown sugar and cinnamon indeed, we could eat this little family right up!  Thank you for sharing your craft with us Megan!

What We Love:

Megan: For the past five years, I’ve been doing my best to make others enjoy a photo session instead of suffering through it.  It can definitely be stressful; you spend money on the session and outfits, get haircuts, bribe the kids…I get it.  I’ve been there and with a 4 year old and a 2 year old…I fully understand the stress!  I like to start out a session by telling everyone how awesome they look; how perfect their outfits are and how great they look together.  It is important to feel comfortable in your own skin before you can feel completely comfortable in front of the camera.  I like to take a moment to get to know everyone, and relate to them.  I always remind moms of little ones that I too have kids…nothing your sweet children say or do will shock or surprise me!  I encourage them to play with each other.  Oh there are crunchy leaves everywhere?  Great, play in them!  Throw your two year old in the air, tickle your 4 year old, tell silly jokes.  To get the more “posed” everyone looking shot, I let them play, giggle, tickle and then quickly tell everyone to look at me…play and then pose.  In my experience the candid, unposed shots are so great to have…but I think most people DO want at least a couple shots of everyone looking at the camera.  This family was a joy to work with-they were truly happy to be together taking pictures with one another, which made my job a breeze.  After our session, they told me they’d never felt so comfortable for photos.  Success.

Lisa and Rachel: We love that Megan shared some tips with us about how to make her clients feel comfortable in front of the camera.  An anecdote or short story gives context to the session and helps our readers understand how photographers get such great shots!  We often see photos that are either extremely candid or extremely posed. Megan’s sessions is “lightly posed” they are photos clients would hang on their walls but still are carefree and lighthearted, so thanks for the tips Megan!  If you are a regular reader of Life + Lens Blog you know how we love fall, so here is another beautiful fall session to cherish before winter – it will be here before you know it!
